How to take the PERFECT headshot

Let’s face it. Most people don’t like to have their picture taken (nervously raises hand). Unfortunately that’s not a strong enough excuse to have a poor headshot photo that represents yourself or your brand. When we meet someone in person, we have mere seconds to make a lasting impression; in the social media space, that window gets cut in half!

You want your branding to represent the best you even when you’re not present. And that’s why your headshot is so important.

So how do you make an already stressful thing less stressful, and maybe even fun? Here are a few tips to get your headshot looking top notch (your photographer will thank you later).

  1. Wear Neutral Colors - Choose colors that complement your skin complexion, and not clash with it. And speaking of clash, speak with your photographer to determine the color of the background so your clothing doesn’t blend it.

  2. Smile or not smile, that is the question - It’s best to determine early on what you want your headshot to say about you. Friendly and approachable, serious and stern, creepy and conceited, it’s your call.

  3. Makeup - Ladies (and gentlemen), if you regularly don’t wear makeup, this might not be the time to experiment. You want to take images of yourself that you feel comfortable with; and if you’re not accustomed to seeing yourself with makeup, there’s a increased chance you wont be satisfied with your headshot.

  4. Hair - Reference 2 and 3. What do you want your hairstyle to say about you? Maybe forego the mullet if you’re applying for an executive position…..as a matter of fact, any position.

  5. Right, Obtuse, or Acute - It’s all about the angles. Stand towards the camera at a slight angle. This posing technique causes a slimming effect, and done correctly with the right lighting, gives the face a more flattering look.

And that’s it! The rest is up to your (hopefully skillful) photographer. Just kidding. No but seriously…

The last piece of advice we can offer is choose the right photographer for the job. Just because they have a 5-star rating on every platform and a stellar portfolio, if there is no connection, it wont work. You want someone who will make you feel comfortable and confident in an already stressful and daunting task.
